Sessions Outline

1) Skate Canada - National, Sectional, Regional, Club, Coach, Parent and Skater

An introduction to the Skate Canada Experience from top to bottom. Who does what, how are they all linked together to develop and support skating in Canada. Discover the info-centre and the Rule-book for all technical aspects of skating. Understand the “Member’s Only” section of the SC website. We will look at policies and rules at National, Sectional, Regional and Club levels

2) Board Governance 101 for Clubs

Topics on Governance Skills and Process. This session provides information on the critical aspects of board governance, the attributes of highly effective governance teams, what every board member needs to know about their roles and responsibilities as a Director and what good directors bring to the board table.

3) Community Gaming Grants

Topics in writing the Community Gaming Grant Application for Clubs – pre-requisites, eligibility criteria, filling out the forms, developing the budget and writing the essay. How to write the best grant application possible. Also we will discuss reporting requirements, and eligible costs.

4) Test Coordinators Update

Standard Information meeting for Club Test Coordinators who need an update on the latest information. Updates on the new STAR testing system, High tests, Club High tests, and selecting/finding Judges.

5) Helicopter Parenting

This very popular session outlines important issues about children and sport, and how parents can best support their children without becoming overbearingly focused on success. How to spot a Helicopter parent, how to decide if you are one, and how to deal with a child who is getting too much helicoptering.

6) Clubs and Club Management 101

This session discusses two very interesting topics that are usually of interest to clubs. The first is “Club Amalgamation”. We will describe the case for amalgamation, the benefits, the costs, and describe how in some cases it can be really beneficial. The other topic is “Team Coaching”. What happens when the coaches all work together as a team, under a Director of Skating? What does it look like? How can this benefit the skaters? What needs to happen to make this real? What are the drawbacks?

7) Building a Great Volunteer Commitment Program

This is a panel discussion. We will compare and contrast several different clubs’ volunteering programs. What are the common aspects of such programs? How can we measure their value to the club? We will also discuss volunteering at the Region and Sectional levels.

8) Risk Management

Risk Management Topics that would be of interest to Clubs (Liability, Insurance, Harrassment and Safe Sport). How to deal with disputes. When and how to get Skate Canada involved. How to know when you need a lawyer to help. This session provides context and perspective to how sport boards should identify, treat and manage their risks. Whether on the field of play or in managing the business of the club, identifying, treating and managing risks are key to a healthy sport club operation

We have recruited a number of experts to present the workshops! We look forward to seeing you all there!
