In order for us to plan  the appropriate amount of ice time, evaluators and volunteers required for the tests days can you please remind your skaters to register as soon as possible.

On the Download Documents page (under Meetings) you will find the formal notice of meeting  and a nomination form for this year's AGM.  It is once again taking place at the Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby...a nice central location for the majority of our clubs in our region.

We hope you will attend and participate in electing the board of directors for the 2012 - 2013 skating season.

The AGM is also the place where we share our successes of the past year and celebrate our Region award winners.  The BC Coast Region CanSkater, Program Assistant, StarSkate Athlete and Region Volunteer of the Year awards will be presented at our AGM.  Note the starting time  - this meeting will start at 7 p.m.

We are also pleased to announce that our special guest speaker at this meeting is Janice Hunter (International Judge, Section board member) Janice will be speaking on the many competitive changes happening in our sport as well as the upcoming pilot our Section is proud to participate in. 

Coaches - you are welcome to attend this meeting - this is an opportunity to catch up on all the changes.

We encourage all club's to send at least a representative to exercise the club's vote - we will share additional information as the date approaches.  As always, all interested parties are welcome at our meetings - this is an excellent place to network, share information and meet your peers from other clubs.

Hello Skaters and Parents,

Once again we will be offering the Kelowna Camp for all RDT members April 6th-8th 2012. For those new to RDT this is the seminar where all RDT Teams from BC gather together and learn and meet new skaters or meet up with skaters they already know. It is a lot of fun! This year’s theme is ‘Mad Hatter’.

 The BC Coast Region is subsidizing the bus for skaters traveling up to Kelowna. We encourage this form of travel as the skaters get to know each other and travel as a team. There are two travel options; please read carefully and choose the best one for you. Please also note that if you are traveling by bus that it is limited to 50 skaters so first come, first serve. Older skaters will be staying in rooms on their own so please take this into consideration when sending your child. Younger skaters will stay in a room with one of the team leaders or chaperones. Skaters will be placed in rooms with other skaters with the same schedule and age. Special requests may be made and may be accommodated however no changes will be made after the rooming list goes out.

 For those traveling on their own expense, you must phone the hotel directly in order for you to book a room at the sport rate (Skater present in same room). Please notify the hotel by March 5th. The host hotel for the camp is the Coast Capri Hotel 1171 Harvey Ave.  The rate is $99.00 +Tax. The rate includes a hot buffet breakfast.  To book rooms at the $99 rate please call 1.877.203.1640 and quote Skate BC 2012 Provincial Camp Group Block.  Please make your reservations by March 5th.

The forms can be downloaded from the Download Documents page under "Regional Development Team" Please read all information and forms carefully including test level and competitive level for your skater as this is used when the groups are being put together. If your skater is skating up at Competitions consistently then please note this on your registration form. No changes will be made once I have been sent the groups. Also remember though the camp is fun for all skaters, the seminar is designed to be beneficial for their skating so being in a group with their friends is not as important as being in a group with their level. Hopefully all skaters will have new friends by the end of the camp.

Thank you to everyone who watched either the live streamed or archived presentation on the proposed Competition Restructuring in the BC/YT Section. We received very positive feedback on the process and many questions on the content. Since that time a lot has transpired and this memo is to update you on very important changes that will take place within the competition structure beginning with SummerSkate 2012......

Skate Canada names teams for ISU Championships

MONCTON, NB – At the conclusion of the highly successful 2012 Canadian Figure Skating Championships Skate Canada CEO William Thompson and High Performance Director Mike Slipchuk named the teams for the three upcoming ISU Championships.

“The level of skating here this week from novice to junior and senior has been tremendous.  We’ve seen champions come from many different parts of the country, which shows that our Skate Canada sections are working really hard to develop skating in their regions,” said Thompson.  “As we prepare to send our skaters out to the championships, we are confident that they will challenge for the podium and championship titles with the best in the world at both the senior and junior level. We will be sending very strong teams to the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in France, ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Colorado and the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Belarus.”

RE: 2011 RDT Singles Seminar 

The BC Coast Region Skater Development Committee is pleased to announce the 2011 BC Coast RDT Singles Seminar will take place December 20th, 2011 at the Agrodome on the PNE Grounds. This seminar is open to all skaters in the BC Coast Region pre-preliminary and up.

The focus of the seminar is "Maximizing Points" - Focus on GOE and Program Components.

Neil Wilson from the Centre of Excellence will be leading this Seminar, joining him will be Tina Leininger and Lorna Bauer, both from the Vancouver Skating Club. Our own RDT Coaches Alexis Wik and Sarah Metcalfe from the Killarney Skating Club and Leah Warwick from Connaught Skating Club will be on hand to lend their expertise! 

Specific details of the seminar are presently in the works! It promises to be a fun filled event!

The BC Coast Region is pleased to off our “Active Start Workshop” (formerly known as the Grassroots Seminar) to skaters in BC Coast Region who are skating in Performance Program or Pre-Preliminary levels. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce skaters to the various STARSkate skating disciplines that a Skate Canada Registered Club may offer. The Active Start Workshop is a great way to supplement the skating season, make friends and enhance your skating experience through a seminar format, and group environment.

Our workshop will feature BC Coast Region Coach, Neil Wilson from the BC Center of Excellence!

(Neil is a former British Senior Men's Champion  - has competed internationally and has held the Guinness World Record for most revolutions in a Spin !)

On July 1, 2011 Skate Canada implemented a helmet use policy. In order to participate in the Canskate Program, all skaters who have not achieved Stage 5 in the CanSkate program or who lack good balance and control must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice.

Re:  Regional Development Team 2012 Registration Package

The Skater Development Committee is pleased to announce the opening of registration for this year ’s Regional Development Team (RDT). The Regional Development Team program encourages the development of young skaters within a “team ” environment.

BC WINTER GAMES (Vernon, BC)

February 23-26, 2012

COACH APPLICATION FORM

The BC Coast Region Board of Directors is seeking interest from coaches to attend the BC Winter Games being held in February in Vernon.

Our Region covers 3 zones within the BC Winter Games structure and we ask our attending coaching staff to work as a coaching team representing those zones.  The scope of work involves on-ice support for the athletes selected to attend (Juvenile, Pre-Novice & Novice level singles athletes) as well as chaperone duties - working together with Team leaders representing each zone.

The BC Coast Region attends all practices, events and activities at the Games as a team.  Coaches and Team Leaders share accommodation with the skaters (sleeping bags in school class rooms usually) and travel with them sharing the complete Games experience.

Transportation and meals are provided as part of the BC Government structure – identified participants will receive further information.  The BC Coast Region will extend an honorarium for coaching services, three coaches are required (1 per zone, 1 of which must be male).

Important Reminder:   

When you apply for a test on Coast Registry you must ensure that both your club test chair’s email address and your coach’s email address as well as your skater’s email address are entered accurately.  The on line application system relies on this contact information to send the approval and payment links back and forth which enables your test to be authorized and fees paid for.

Errors with incorrect emails addresses will prevent your test application from being processed.

Sharon Dahl, member of the Cheam Skating Club in the BC Coast Region has been volunteering for over 34 years.  

While managing a full time career as an accountant for the Over-waitea Food Group, family commitments as wife and mother, and director for the BC/YT Section, Sharon continues to serve as Treasurer on the Coast Region Board. Her behind the scenes skills as a data specialist and competition organizer have brought unsurpassed excellence to the delivery of every event this season. We are very proud of Sharon’s accomplishments and are privileged to have her on our Region team. Her involvement at all levels of our sport is truly remarkable: Treasurer, Vice President, Competition Chairman, Carnival Producer & Scriptwriter,Program Assistant

                       IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

November 30, 2010

To our members in the BC/YT Section

Several years ago we were mandated by Skate Canada to have a section qualifying competition for skaters advancing to the National STARSkate Championships.  It was at that time that we offered the Pacific STARSkate Championship.

Currently Skate Canada no longer has this National Championship, so we are no longer in need of a competition where skaters must qualify.

This coming season we are introducing the Pond to Podium Super Series, for both STARSkate and Competitive skaters.  This series gives every interested skater the opportunity to compete in freeskate, and see how they compare to other skaters in our Section.  Every Super Series competition will also offer Interpretive events if skaters wish to compete in that discipline.  With the Super Series, there will be far more opportunities for many more skaters as the skaters will not have to qualify to participate.

At this time we are announcing that the 2011 Pacific STARSkate Championships being held in Cranbrook in March 2011 will be the last one held.  We thank all of our previous hosts of this competition for providing a wonderful experience for our skaters and we look forward to the start of our Pond to Podium Super Series.

Congratulations to all skater who participate in the 2010 Jingle Blades Competition.  I hope everyone had a great time.  Thank you to the committee from the White Rock South Surrey Skating Club and all of the volunteers to made this such a successful event once again.

The results from this competition are now available on the Competitions Results page.  Please note that only the final results are posted.  All skater Jr Bronze and up and all Competitive events, received a printout of their report cards - these will not be posted on this website.

Re:        Interim Test Fees – December Test dates
 
As you know, we have been through lots of change since we started the journey in April of restructuring test days in our region.  After much debate and research (beyond our Region and Section) our Region board has agreed that a per test user fee is the best solution to our funding strategy with regards to tests.
 
While lots of research and discussion has taken place there still is an outstanding piece which we hope to have resolved by the beginning of November. Therefore in order to open the Coast Registry so that skaters can register for December test dates we have set the following interim test fees as follows.

• Dance – $10.00 administration fee per each dance test taken
• All other tests – $12.00 administration fee per test taken

 
Note that the Coast Registry will be open effective Thursday, October 28, 2010.
